Head Boys Basketball Coach: Michael Mays

Michael Mays – Varsity Head Coach
Coach Mays began his high school career in the late 90s when, during the 1999-2000 season, the team won the district championship, region championship, sectional championship, and advanced to the final 4 of the state.  Michael was all-district and all-region player and won the “Mustang Award” as a senior.
Michael played basketball at the NCAA Division 1 level at Lipscomb University during the transition to the Atlantic Sun Conference.  After 4 years of college basketball, he received the “Best Teammate” award, which was subsequently renamed the “Mike Mays Award”.
Coach Mays has taught and coached high school basketball for 12 years.  These teams have won 2 high school region championships, with 3 sub state appearances, and a state tournament berth.  Michael has also coached the varsity boys and girls golf teams, having won 6 district championships, 4 region championships, 1 state runner-up, and an individual state champion.
Assistant Boys Coach: Josh Slater

Josh Slater – Varsity Assistant and JV Coach
Josh Slater was a star high school basketball player as he was a 1,000 point scorer along with multiple all district and all region awards.  He also earned a prestigious McDonald’s All American nomination.
Josh continued his basketball career at Lipscomb University where he made an immediate impact in his first year and earned a spot on the Atlantic Sun All-Freshmen team.  Josh led the Bisons through one of the best stretches in their NCAA Division 1 era as he was First Team All Conference in 2010 and 2011, NABC All District in 2010 and 2011, 1,000 point club, and All Academic team.
Josh works at First Advantage Bank and resides in Nashville with his wife, Mary, and their 7 month old son, Remy.

Clayton Pickens – Varsity Assistant and JV Coach
Clayton Pickens played basketball and football in high school and earned All Region honors in both sports.  He had a 4.0 GPA in High School which was in the top 10% in his class and is a Presidential Scholar.  Clayton also earned the Moss-Oliver Award which is given to one male and and one female in Nashville who exemplifies excellence in athletics, academics, and community service.
Clayton has coached youth football and basketball for the last 2 years and has experience in multiple intenrships including updating the profiles of HS athletes through “247 Sports”, a premier national sports media site.
Joe Simpson – Middle School Head Coach
Joe Simpson has coached youth basketball for more that 25 years, including 15 years of coaching AAU travel teams. From 2007 to 2012, Coach Simpson created, owned, and managed the “USBA” program, a multi use facility that offered private lessons, camps, and summer teams.  During this period, more that 100 basketball teams were overseen by Coach Simpson.
Coach Simpson specializes in skill development for young basketball players and has been an integral part in over 50 athletes earning a chance to play college basketball.
All 4 of Joe Simpsons own children were basketball stars at the high school level, with one playing at the collegiate level and another that is receiving interest from colleges.  Joe and his wife, Kim, and family reside in Brentwood.
